Diagnosing Shifting Problems

A properly indexed drivetrain shifts cleanly and quietly. If your gears skip under load, hesitate between sprockets, or make grinding noises, the system needs attention. Common causes include stretched cables, worn chain, bent derailleur hanger, or a cassette past its service life. We diagnose the root cause before recommending parts, so you only pay for what actually needs replacing.

Gear Indexing & Cable Replacement

Most shifting problems are solved with fresh inner cables and careful indexing. Cables stretch over time and outer housings fill with grit from London roads. We replace cables and housings, then index each gear precisely using barrel adjusters and limit screws so shifts are crisp across the full cassette range.

Chain, Cassette & Chainring Replacement

Chains wear gradually and, if left too long, accelerate cassette and chainring wear. We measure chain stretch with a calibrated gauge and advise when replacement is due. Fitting a new chain at the right time extends cassette life significantly. When already worn, we replace them as a matched set to avoid skipping.

Derailleur Hanger Alignment

A bent derailleur hanger causes persistent mis-shifting that no amount of cable adjustment can fix. We check hanger alignment with a dedicated alignment gauge and straighten or replace the hanger as needed. This is a common issue after a bike has been knocked over or transported without protection.
